collage and video installation, 2018

Using photographs I took from Chinatown in Prato, Italy, I collage images to create a surreal and dystopian narrative of Prato. Introduced to me as a place of cultural, ethnic diversity and a birthplace of textiles, popular tourist descriptions of Prato disregards its conditions that are implied by a visit to the city's Chinatown; a place not for tourists, but brothel advertisements, physical labor, and smoke stacks of factories. Made in Italy is a layered translation of my personal observations and experience of Prato’s Chinatown, subverting the luxurious connotations of "Made in Italy" that seems to distinguish itself from "Made in China".
