video & sculpture installation, 2019
foam, house paint, celluclay, video-performance (3:51)
These pug sculptures are mockups of 18th Century Chinese porcelain art objects made exclusively for Western export. In a performance, It is inserted into Chinese establishments in the diaspora, referencing immigrants' performativity, then brought to the American upper-middle class home, and finally to the Western art institution. The prop-like foam re-brands itself as a critique of Western colonial fetishization of Oriental decor and rejects false notions of authenticity.
